December, 16, 2022 Serengeti Breweries Limited (SBL) has launched its one of its kind and second Sustainability Report (2022) depicting plenty of performance covering crucial development points including, environmental management, inclusion and diversity, responsible drinking and sustainability.
The subsidiary of East Africa Breweries Limited (EABL) executed the report launch at one of its operating plants in Chang'ombe Dar es Salaam, attended by members of the press and stakeholders in the sustainability development.
In its quest to realize the Society 2030: Spirit of Progress core six pillars
(Positive drinking, championing inclusion and diversity, sustainable by design, low carbon world,
preserve water and doing business the right way), SBL has emerged strong and exemplary in delivering best outcomes.
“SBL is proud to be at the forefront of championing sustainable development in a rather unique way that is inclusive
and creative. We look forward to extend this approach further to attend more goals” SBL's Corporate Relations Director,
John Wanyancha highlighted, during his opening remarks at the launch.
In changing the way people drink for the best, through its positive drinking, Wrong Side of the road and
DrinkiQ campaigns, SBL has reached more than 5000 drivers nationwide, engaged with 8,200 students on underage drinking
and influenced more than 2000 people to educate themselves on their e-learning tool (DrinkiQ).
On inclusion and diversity, a hotspot championed by the government and private sector, the brewer managed to offer
102 scholarships to youth under its household agribusiness scholarship “Kilimo viwanda” with 50 percent of the offer
going to women and People With Disabilities (PWD).
“Even here at SBL, were are practicing the latter effectively from recruitment, skills and training to maternal health
with six months leave to offer decent support to our female staff” he added.
SBL has made water it's priority via its Water for Life project in Tanzania. On this sphere,
delivered a Water Treatment Plant to residents of Basuto village in Hanang District of Manyara region.
SBL has provided the capacity to serve 14,000 people, the project is set to deliver safe and clean water to four
villages in Basuto Ward, but also with ability to purify 900,000 liters of water in 12 hours, which is sufficient to
meet, and exceed Basuto Ward's current average daily water demand of 700,000 liters.
SBL's water usage ratio improved to 3.95 L/L which represents a reduction of 7.6% compared to the same period in F21.
This reduction is equivalent to water saving of 40 million liters.
As Africa wraps up the COP27 dubbed “Africa COP” SBL contributes to the latter with a decent effort.
SBL has improved energy usage ration by 1 percent and are instituting interventions to further accelerate energy
usage reduction in F23.
“All three SBL sites have transitioned to the use of LPG forklifts which have lower emissions than the previous diesel
forklifts,” the report argued.
More importantly, SBL planted over 5,000 trees in Kongwa district, Dodoma region. On the same, the beer maker has
maintained 0 tonnes of waste to landfill from our direct operations.
Interestingly, the company is leveraging modern technology to enhance its operations, from tracking and managing its
carbon-foot print, plant on-road accident and incident management,
“Nearly 100 percent of all our plastics used are widely recyclable, reusable and compostable. This is higher than 2021,
where 90 percent of our plastics were widely recyclable and also higher than our 2022 target of 98 percent” the
report stated.
The latter is not only an emerging and essential discussion in the corporate modern world but also an inspiration
to other players in the private and public sector field to deliver on the same.
